Of course I can't speak for Terry up there but, I think his post was hypothetical. If the players are being honest and he/she played to their honest potential, how will the system know the gender of Pat? I still say it's a valid point |

The system knows the gender of the player because each player has a personal profile.

I agree that the system should be geared toward statistical odds when a new player enters the league (such as sex). I do not, however, agree that the system should be limited to anyone based on sex once they have established their capabilities according to the system.
I currently have a player on my team who HAS to play as a SL2 in 9ball and twice (almost 3) times he has been "Skunked" by female SL2 players. That is less than 4 balls the entire match. This not only hurts the team, but also the confidence a player/team has in the league to make it fair for them. I don't know if this boils down to a question of if the female ranks are correct, or if he should be able to be lowered, but I feel it should be looked at.
Does it really matter though? Really? I realize that it is an extremely difficult sport to handicap correctly. Everyone has there ups and downs from week to week, so that could explain a lot of it. I guess the thing you have to realize is you can either spend time complaining about it, or just get better.

Chris,I have played in the APA since 1994 and I have had the same problems you're having, handicap wise.I have brought a many of NEW players into the League. LOTS of them,I talked them into playing pool for thier FIRST TIME,and had to play them 10 times in a session.RESULTS= 10 LOSSES.I think the APA NEEDS to look at this,if we are to continue brining in new players.Especially in 9 BALL......Man that really hurts THIER EGO and CONFIDENCE, besides REALLY HURTING THE TEAM.But we have to play by it.My GOD,sooner or later, they'll HAVE to RENEW at least some of the rules. I'm talking about RANK WISE, for some of our new people. After playing ONE SESSION,and NOT WINNING any games,it's extremely hard to get them to come back......I have NEVER said anything about the SEX thing, in our handicapping,I have ALWAYS thought they would RENEW some of the RULES.In 9 ball, that is certain NO CHANCE of going to the Cities, because we cannot hold up as a team, under such cercumstances.Well, enough of my mouth.MAYBE,as many complaints that they've had. They WILL ,at LEAST LOOK at the PROBLEM.GOOD LUCK Chris.BECAUSE WE NEED IT,as it is now.
PS. MERRY MERRY and HAPPY HAPPY to ALL !!!!
May the MOST, you wish for be the LEAST, you get !!!! |

Well, this will be fun as I am a different Chris Clark adding to the same thread....
I have been involved with many teams, both 8 and 9 ball in my roughly 9 years with the Charlotte APA, and have had several conversations with players on the subject of gender vs. handicap with players on my teams, and even on other teams. While I do shift from side to side on the subject, I do have one constant I feel, that as far as minimum and maximum handicaps are concerned, gender should not be a factor.
Several years back, a mistake was made in the system and several men ended up as a SL2 in 8-ball, based upon their performance. The correction was made and they were moved back to a SL3 even though their performance did not merit such a move. This caused problems with one of the females on my team who from that point forward refused to play a male 3 as she felt they were a "sand-bagger" (I personally hate this term, but that is a whole new thread). I understand that this individual still is very vocal about it, and personally, I am glad she is not longer on my team forcing me to deal with it.
In my view, the skill level of various players should be based entirely upon the player, and not modified based upon the player gender. While it might be true that the average male players are a 4 (in 8-ball) and the average female is a 3 (again in 8-ball), and that does give a good starting point, once a handicap is established, it should be upon the individual person's performance and not the group they belong to. The same should hold true in 9-ball.
As for the Ego's of players, I have had to do some stroking here myself, however, I consider that to be an individual problem with the player involved and nothing more. For the most part, I have found most players usually think they are better then they are currently ranked, but that is a whole different story. I usually have to convince my players to play the best they can at all times, and let the skill levels work out for themselves. With few exceptions, this has worked well for me.

i think the skill levels kindly favor the women personally i've played some women that were 3's like me but played so well that if they were men they would be a good 4 or 5 unless there's a CHEATging and i've played quite a few CHEATging 3's and 4's that need to be 5's or 6's. |
